Patrick Watson on the album:
Hi everyone,
Our new album, “Adventures in your own Backyard” is coming out in April 2012. It was a record made with lots a love at home. It has been a great companion to me while making it and I hope it treats everybody who listens to it the same way.
Press release:
In Patrick’s own words, Adventures… is an effort on the band’s part to “make the kind of music we would want to listen to at home.” The album’s title is a nod to this sentiment and to the fact that it was recorded almost entirely in Watson’s apartment in Montreal, unlike his previous efforts which were sprawling recordings in both geography and arrangements.
In spite of the relatively spartan settings in which to record, Adventures… is equally as ambitious as Watson’s previous efforts and a thing of dynamic beauty. The result is an album that is still ripe with the touchstones one has come to expect from Patrick Watson and his collaborators, but permeated with a greater sense of patience and confidence. Adventures In Your Own Backyard is an attempt by Watson and the band to simplify their sights—to make music a bit more close to home in every sense of the phrase.
Adventures… will be preceded by the single and video for the sweeping, elegant “Into Giants,” which is available for preview to all below. Patrick and his band have already lined up shows before the album’s release that will include a headlining appearance at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas in March, a variety of dates across Europe this April, and support dates with Andrew Bird in the US this May, with much more touring to follow throughout the world.

Live Concert Stream of “La Route Chante: A Tribute for Lhasa De Sela”

Patrick Watson and a number of other Montreal musicians who had an artistic relationship with the late, Lhasa De Sela, gathered for a tribute concert earlier this month. CBC was on hand to record the show and it is now available for stream at the link below.
Album number five, what do we know?
It’s been quite some time since we saw the band releasing something, with the last release being Je Te Laisserai Des Mots, back in September 2010. As most of you have heard, the band is working hard on their next album.
What and when?
The new album will be the bands fifth. Some people say it’s going to be their fourth, but most of the band members worked on Waterproof9 to so, we consided that to be their first.
The next album will probably be called “Adventures In Your Own Backyard”, according to an interview Patrick did last September. It is set to release in Early 2012, which is where we are right now, so it’s probably not going to be very long until we get a release date!
The style
Where Close To Paradise was a very piano driven album, and Wooden Arms focused on percussion, the fifth album will be more relaxed, according to Patrick:
“I find it a lot more heartfelt than the other records in the sense where there’s less stuff. With the other records, there was a lot of things happening all the time. This one’s a bit more subdued, but still has crazy arrangements. It’s more direct.”
Having heard the new songs that will probably be on the album (more on that below), that’s a statement that one can understand. The new songs sound happier. Where Close To Paradise was equal to fall, Wooden Arms to spring, the next album will probably be like a full blown hot summer day.
The songs
Though it has been a long time since the band released their last album, we’ve had quite some chance to hear what they have been working on. Here are the songs that we think will be on the album:
Most likely:
High possibility
Low possibility
Just click on the links to see more info on the songs and listen to live recordings of them (except for Swimming Pool, Anywhere and Step Out For A While).
Backyard series
As part of the new album, the band are doing some gigs in people backyards and other strange places. They have played in an Amsterdam backyard and alongside a some Quebec train tracks.
“We’re starting to build a web series that is stories in people’s backyards. When we tour we’re going to try to play peoples’ backyards and collect their stories as we go. It’s based on David Lynch’s Interview Project, this web project he did in the States. They find weird characters in small towns and do little documentaries on them”
Live dates
Since the release will be in the coming months, it would be really possible that the band will be playing the big summer festivals in Europe. They will probably start off in Canada by playing a couple of shows there, and then move on to Europe. Of course, this is still speculation too.
Conclusion
There’s a lot to be excited about. We are really looking forward to the new album and tour, it’s gonna be amazing. What do you think about the new songs and what do you expect from the new album? Let us know in the reaction panel, Twitter or Facebook.

Welcome to the new Interference From The Sky!

Hello everyone, and welcome to the new Interference From The Sky!
First of all, happy new year to all of you. As we’ve said before, 2012 will be a big year for our Patrick Watson fan community, as we were planning to update the website completely, and well, we did!
Starting today, this Tumblr page will be the new home of Interference From The Sky. A lot has changed, but don’t be afraid that you have missed out on something. Let’s start at the beginning:
What’s Interference From The Sky?
Interference From The Sky is a fan community dedicated to the Canadian band Patrick Watson. It’s also a song by that same band. It’s the b-side for The Great Escape. Our fan community serves the people that are interested in this band and want to stay up to date about everything that happens around them, like new tour dates, new songs that are played live, the upcoming new album and recordings of shows.
What has changed?
Until last week, our website, http://www.patrick-watson.net, pointed to a portal, which was connected to a forum. The forum is still there, but the portal has vanished. This Tumblr page will be the new home of the website where we will keep you updated with all the news. The forum will now be the place to discuss gigs, music, and other stuff.
What’s new?
Up until today, we used static pages and forum pages for tour dates and setlists. This wasn’t really convenient and very hard to use. While browsing the internet looking for information about one of my other favourite bands, I stumbled upon MuseWiki, a Wiki dedicated to the band Muse. I was really surprised by the ease of use and how it made all the information very accessible and editable by everyone. That’s why, starting today, we are introducing Watson Wiki!
Watson Wiki?
Yep, a MediaWiki dedicated to Patrick Watson. The goal of this Wiki is to gather all the info about the band in one place and make it accessible and editable for everyone. I’ve been working on this for a couple of months now, and it still is far from done, but it’s a nice start. At this moment it has all the tour dates the band has ever played (and which are publicly known), info about the most popular songs and set lists for the gigs where we could find them. In the next couple of weeks, it’ll be regularly updated with info on more songs, info about the albums, the band members and downloadable content like recorded concerts.
You can access Watson Wiki, the tour dates and our forums through the side bar on the left of this page.
2012
We chose to use Tumblr because it’s really easy to use and allows us to post and archive links, news, pictures and videos, so we can really keep you updated. And we need to, because 2012 will, without a doubt, be a really interesting year for Patrick Watson fans. The band will be releasing their new album (a post about what we know about that will follow later this week) and that will probably mean new live dates. Enough reasons to be excited, we think. We hope you are too and we hope you enjoy using the new website.
Cheers,
Zaid & Christiaan
